Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation: An Alternative Option
نویسنده
چکیده
In 2010, there were an estimated 730,000 new cancer cases in females, resulting in approximately 270,000 deaths [ 1 ] . Although malignancy remains a critical health concern, signi fi cant medical advances in cancer detection and treatment have improved survival rates for patients. Gonadotoxic chemotherapy or radiation for malignant disease may result in altered ovarian function, affecting both hormonal production and reproductive potential (discussed in detail in Chap. 1 of this volume). The most severe consequences are premature ovarian insuf fi ciency and infertility, which patients report as major quality-of-life concerns [ 2, 3 ] . Restoration of ovarian function, in terms of not only fertility but also endocrine function, would substantially improve the quality of life for women of reproductive age after they have survived cancer and its treatment [ 4 ] .

In women, around 10% of cancers occur in those younger than 45 years old. Although aggressive chemotherapy/radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation can cure more than 90% of girls and young women affected by disorders requiring such treatment, the ovaries are very sensitive to cytotoxic drugs, especially to alkylating agents. Therefore, these treatments can result in premature ovarian failu...

Background Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is an option for patients who require immediate gonagonadotoxic treatment of cancers. when there is insufficient time to conduct ovulation induction This procedure can be used in patients with genetic mutations with a high risk for premature ovarian failure. This strategy is the only option for fertility preservation in prepubertal girls or in women who...

Cryopreservation of embryos and gametes has become an indispensible service for infertility treatment. Vitrification is now a prevalent technique for cryopreservation in assisted reproductive technology (ART) replacing, in many cases, conventional slow cooling methodology. Fertility preservation in female patients has become a very topical issue. Various malignant and nonmalignant diseases have...
متن کاملI-7: Human Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation:State of The ART
In recent years, advances in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood, adolescent and adult cancer have significantly improved the survival rate and life expectancy of cancer patients. However, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments are gonadotoxic and may induce the loss of ovarian function and fertility with consequent premature ovarian failure (POF). A number of factors determine the level...

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is an option to preserve reproductive potential in patients who must urgently undergo aggressive chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy or who have other medical conditions requiring treatment that may threaten ovarian function and subsequent fertility. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation may be the only option available to prepubertal girls undergoing such treatments. How...

Cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos is commonly used to preserve fertility. However, women undergoing cancer treatment may not have the time or may not be good candidates for these options. Ovarian cortical tissue cryopreservation and subsequent tissue transplant has been proven successful yet inefficient in preserving larger secondary follicles, and is not recommended as a fertility preser...
